Bangladesh

A newborn girl was rescued from the balcony of a mosque in Jashore’s Jhikargachha upazila early this morning.

The child is now in the legal custody of Anna Khatun, wife of Mofizur Rahman from Kauria Morolpara, following necessary legal procedures, said Bhupali Sarkar, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Jhikargachha.

“The baby is currently healthy and has been placed in the custody of Anna Khatun through legal procedures,” she said.

Sirajul Islam, assistant social service officer of the upazila, reported that the muazzin of Kauria Baitul Mamun Jame Mosque found the newborn in a bloodied condition while giving call to prayer for Fazr at dawn.

Anna Khatun, a nearby resident, promptly rescued the child and took her to the hospital.

“Since Anna Khatun expressed her willingness to take responsibility, the child has been placed in her custody,” Sirajul said.

Bablu Rahman Khan, officer-in-charge of Jhikargacha Police Station said that efforts are ongoing to locate the child’s parents. The Upazila Social Service Office is also involved in the process.
