No criminals, including those on the “top criminal” list like Pichchi Helal and Emon, will be spared if they re-engage in crimes after their release from jail, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said toda

“All types of criminals, including those on the top criminal list, will be brought to justice under the law,” said Rezaul Karim Mallik, additional commissioner (Detectives) of the DMP, during a briefing at the DMP media center.

His remarks came in response to queries about Detective Branch (DB) actions amid concerns over a deteriorating law-and-order situation, with top criminals resuming criminal activities after being released from prison.

Names like Hasan Helal alias Pichchi Helal and Sanjidul Hassan Emon, who were among the 23 individuals listed as “top terror” by police in 2001, have reappeared in connection with various crimes, including murder.

Helal was named in a murder case filed with Mohammadpur Police Station on September 21 last year. Meanwhile, Emon was accused in a case filed in connection to Friday’s attack on two computer traders in the capital’s Elephant Road area.

“We respect the law and are paying special attention to maintaining stability and ensuring that people can live in comfort and peace,” Malik said.

Responding to a question about whether the police have yet to regain their morale, as nighttime patrols appear less frequent than before, Mallik said, “I don’t believe that to be the case. The police have regained their morale. Duties are being carried out diligently under the current commissioner’s directives, and we are strengthening our activities, including patrolling.”

A list of individuals involved in crimes since August 5 has been prepared, and actions are being taken accordingly, the official added.
